Seminars
Three all-day seminars were held on the Friday before the show, Painting, Casting and Sculpting. I
attended the sculpting class, which was hosted by an expert panel of FX Supremo Chris Walas
(Gremlins, The Fly & Fly 2), ILM's Carol Bauman, Hollywood makeup expert & actor John Goodwin
and freelance scuptor Ron Lizorty - more talent than you could ever hope to squeeze into a
single room!
The class at work
Here are some pictures of my attempt in progress - we all started off making a basically
human shaped head form and then began to digress. I was initially trying to keep mine human
but as you'll see, I didn't succeed, so I just started adding bits willy-nilly ;-)
Step 1
The basic head shape is formed in Super Sculpey over
an armature of wood and scrunched up cooking foil.
Step 2
Added the eyes, nose and upper lip and started to
define the jawbone. I pushed one eye (wooden bead) in too far and couldn't get it out again without
wrecking the whole face...
Step 3
Added lower lip and wacky ears, and started to refine
the face details. The torso was also blocked in.
Step 4
Detailed the ears and neck & colar bone. Tweaked the chin
a bit.
Step 5
Added some gill-like details to the cheeks (hey,
I was making it up as I went along, ok?), and started shaping the chest & shoulders.
Step 6
Experimented with some veins on the temples then
Bzzzzzzzzt! Time up!
All in a day’s work...
